An Icelandic horse in the town Tann in Röhn district in Germany, most likely saved the life of an older man in late January. When the mare noticed the man, who was lying motionless in the snow, she notified her owner by snorting loudly. The man was suffering from hypothermia and had to be flown to the hospital.
“Perla is Very Alert”
The Icelandic horse Perla resides in a paddock 500 meters (1,640 feet) from Theobaldsdorf, a neighborhood of Tann. When Perla’s owner came to check on her ten horses in the morning of January 25, she noticed that the mare was behaving oddly. She snorted loudly; something was off. “Perla is the leader of the group and very alert. If she wants to bring something to my attention, she snorts in a special way,” Sabine explained in an interview on Hit Radio FFH (Reporter: Eva-Maria Lauber).
Sabine walked through the paddock and suddenly she noticed a dark pile in the snow behind a shrub. It was a man from the village, who lay there motionless. Sabine called the emergency medical services straight away, but because of the heavy snow, the fire brigade also had to be called out to recover the man, who is 62, from the snow. The man’s condition is no longer critical. According to police, he may have been drunk.
